Description

Gutter Pair Album No.1 with GB QEII Stamps

The  term “Gutter Pair” normally refers to a pair of stamps separated by part of the blank gutter margin. This came about because most British stamps were printed in sheets containing two panes. The majority of these sheets contained blank gutters, hence the term “Gutter Pairs” (G/P).

On each sheet (ie two panes) most Printers added  spots of colour to one gutter. These corresponded to the colours of a particular stamp. This gave us the term “Traffic Light Gutter Pairs” (TL /GP).

It is obvious from the above that the Traffic Light Gutter Pairs are rarer than their plain Gutter Pair brothers!

Gutter Pairs wih Commemorative Stamps were first used for the Royal Silver Wedding 3p issue of 20th November 1972,  printed on the “Jumelle” machine.  Thc Stanley Gibbon’s Concise catalogue number is 918.

There is then an unbroken run of commemoratives with G/P and TL/GP. These ran up until the Christmas issue of 1979 (Concise numbers 1104 to 1108). From this date there are no Traffic Light Gutter Pairs in the above format.

The High Value Machin issue of 2nd February 1977 is also in this range. These three definitives are the £1.00, £2.00, and the £5.00 stamps. (The Concise numbers are 1026 to 1028 inclusive).
